A Tucson woman was arrested Friday night in connection with the attempted drowning of her 9-month-old baby, according to the Tucson Police Department.
Leina Beckner, 28, was arrested on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder and child abuse, police said.
Shortly before 5 p.m. Friday, the Tucson Fire Department responded to reports of a possible child drowning near Ajo Way and Benson Highway.
Officials began administering first aid until paramedics arrived and took the baby to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
Detectives arrived at the scene and learned the father of the baby had ended his relationship with Beckner that day and that she had said she was going to kill the baby and herself, police said.
Beckner had attempted to drown the baby in a bathtub filled with water, police said, but later removed the baby from the water and placed her on the bed.
Beckner then tried to help the baby and called 911 to report what had happened, police said..
The baby was in stable condition Sunday afternoon. Beckner has been booked into Pima County Jail, police said.
